Cricinfo XI Laws that need Changing

With MCC set to change a few of the rules of the game, we look at 11 that could do with tweaking, or scrapping altogether, to make cricket more interesting and fair

1. Ban leg-byes
2. Disallow backing up
3. Give lbws on balls hitting outside off stump

5. Legitimise ball-tampering
6. Permit more bouncers in ODIs

9. Ban overthrows for direct hits

11. Don't give a batsman out if he is in but his bat is in the air

It seems the batsmen currently have an unfair advantage and I hope at least some of these will be changed. Especially 5,6,8,10,

3. Give lbws on balls hitting outside off stump----i could write an essay on how silly that is
4. Don't offer players the light---whats the alternative?
5. Legitimise ball-tampering--- maybe to an extent. technically spit shining the ball is a tamper.
6. Permit more bouncers in ODIs---yeah why not
7. Be consistent in the use of substitutes and runners--- they're not already?
8. Allow the fielder to touch the boundary rope------not a fan
9. Ban overthrows for direct hits ---no
10. Allow two bowlers 12 overs apiece in an ODI innings ----no because the art of bowling in an ODI is planning who to bowl and when
11. Don't give a batsman out if he is in but his bat is in the air ----opens up a can of worms.



one ting i personally want to see is the 'mankad' brought in as a legitamate way to get a batsman out.


and although this isnt a rule change, a gimmick id like to see is 'targets' in the stand where teams get bonuses if they hit it.

australias state competition had it in the 90s, it worked. but the benefits were monetary.

imagine if you could get ten runs for hotting a 2metre by 2 metre signboard put at the top of a grandstand.... 10 balls to win...1 over......brendan taylor at the crease...

smashes it high and long, above the lower grandstand....into the sign....zimbabwe win.....sri lanka lose.

Read the link for the explanations of the list I have summarised the list. I think these changes highlight the fact that the law makers have made batting a bit too easy let them level the feild again and then we will see more class and more under par batsmen exposed or raise their game.

1. Ban leg-byes (I understand the reasoning to ban leg-byes, but they are a unique quirk of cricket which I think would be missed if they were banned)
2. Disallow backing up (Can the non-striking batsmen not be run out if the ball is hit back at the stumps and brushes the bowler on the way past?)
3. Give lbws on balls hitting outside off stump (bad idea)
4. Don't offer players the light (bad idea)
5. Legitimise ball-tampering (ball-tampering is already done anyway, we should just legalise it as long as no foreign objects are used. Fingernails, teeth, etc should all be allowed)
6. Permit more bouncers in ODIs (maybe two per over)
7. Be consistent in the use of substitutes and runners (i think the laws currently governing this issue are fine)
8. Allow the fielder to touch the boundary rope (bad idea)
9. Ban overthrows for direct hits (bad idea)
10. Allow two bowlers 12 overs apiece in an ODI innings (this would only give more advantage to batting, as teams could choose an extra batter and just use part time bowlers)
11. Don't give a batsman out if he is in but his bat is in the air (the bat should be grounded, simply because it is the best way to tell if someone is safe, I can just see contraversial decisions being made trying to figure out if the bat has crossed the line in the air)

Mike i couldn't agree more with you. It so annoys me when you bowl an in swinger or a ball that nips down leg and the umpire signals a wide. Ugh i hate it !! That would be the rule I'd like to change, well pointed out Mike

Sometimes the batsmen is almost bowled down the leg side and it is called a wide - ridiculous.
