Re: racial mix of the side

I've been brought up in a cricketing family, and my uncle is one of the selectors where I play my cricket. So I spoke to him about your Ideas mate, and we both agreed that the Zimbabwean national side should be selected on merit, a technique he currently uses when selecting.
Zimbabwean Cricket has only really just begun to move forward due to the selectors picking the sides on merit and ability, and I think this way, and this way alone, will only help move us in the right direction.

And do I think Cremer should be in ahead of Utsea, ofcourse he should ! :D

If quotas were introduced I would say good bye to Zimbabwe cricket. Wasn't that one of the reasons in which the rebels went on strike?

It would be a backward step and replace everything which has gone so well since 2009ish.

And we have black players already. I think South Africa envy us by us being able to play a lot of black players and white players in the same team.

the rebels went on strike to get contracts that paid more elsewhere, IMHO.

Agree about Safrica.

I HATE QUOTAS! and Holy cows etc... MERIT is the only way forward. And am sure SA envy us big time! We are a MODEL country in this regards. LOL. And being in SA I get sick and tired of people tredding lightly on race issues, I seriously think Zim are passed that stage and we can discuss these issues without fear.

I am glad this topic can be discussed without any problems. It seems quotas are still as unpopular now as they were when they were first brought in.

Merit is the only way to go. I mean quota's weaken a side and also i imaging that the team spirit can't be that great when you have people that you know are not the best for the team in the side. Also it begs the question, where do quota's end? would you make it so that if we had an enitrely black cricket side that were the best, would you have to pick 1 white player and 1 indian to make it a fully intergrated side? Even though this would mean leaving out more talented black players? it is a slippery slope.

The national side should be the strongest possible side, based purely on ability - anything else penalises those who make the effort to improve themselves but are the "wrong" colour, while playing an intentionally under-strength side is disrespectful to your opponents.

if this wre facebook, i'd be pressing the 'like' button right now.

a few points that Zim doggy thinks...

a) our team isnt strong enough to afford to start picking people on other reasons besides merit.
b) quotas disenchants players and hey go to england or aus. Pietersens move was a direct result of his own disgust at this.
c) im white, but if the situation were reversed and the top 11 players were negros the 3 or 4 token whites in the team were affecting performance of the teami would feel embarrased and inadequate. I would probably feel the same if i were black.
d) the above is irrelevant anyway as Elton,Taibu,Rainsford,Hamilton, prosper and cremer are all regulars in the side anyway.
e) IF quotas MUST be introduced, just do it at domestic level? dont let the national team suffer.
f) As eugne said...bottom up, not top down. Given the population s what it is grassroots cricket will naturally have more negros coming through anyway. I personally believe after the current crop we wont see a white fast bowler again.

Exactly since the blacks are in the majority the quotas would have to be for the whites and Indians, we would have to appeal to the Ministry of sport as am sure they would have a hand in it as well,to adress quotas in soccer as well...

Interesting that Bafana Bafana could field starting XIs without any white players - the Springboks get criticised for fielding teams with an 11-4 mix. Double standards it seems.
