Cricket Kenya (CK) Chief Executive Officer Tom Sears has said that the national team would play several competitive One-Day Internationals amongst the top ranked teams, as part of the team’s preparation for next year’s ICC World Cup.
"Recently, Kenya’s performance has not been impressive due to poor on-field performance and we are working with the technical bench to ensure the team plays more competitive matches before December," he said.
"We intend to play strong sides such as Bangladesh, Pakistan and Zimbabwe in some of our build-up matches," said Sears.
Sears was speaking on Sunday at the Coast Gymkhana Sports Club after attending an executive meeting of the Cricket Kenya Coast branch on how to improve standards of cricket in the region.
Also present were CK Chairman Samir Inamdar and Coast branch chairman Pankaj Desai.
"We are in the process of releasing our blueprint on how to run the national team and the junior team as well," Sears added.
He said he would appoint selectors to work with regional development officers to identify talent among age groups for Cricket Kenya Elite programme.
Proper league
He promised to put in place a proper league structure to engage players in competitive cricket throughout the year. Sears said the technical bench may incorporate some of the national under-19 players in the senior team for continuity.
The national junior side on Sunday qualified for the ICC Under-19 World Cup after emerging second behind Namibia.
At the same time, Inamdar announced the appointment of Mehdi Karachiwalla as the Coast branch Cricket Development Officer.
Karichiwalla, based in the UK, once played for Aga Khan Club of Mombasa and the national team. He will be in charge of introducing the game especially to public schools and will work with the Cricket Development Programme set up by the Coast Cricket Association and Cricket Kenya. The programme is headed by former players Pradeep Patel and Sibtain Kassamali.
