ALLROUNDER Julia Chibhabha, sister to Zimbabwe batsman Chamu Chibhabha will captain the Zimbabwe’s woman cricket team, in their bid to qualify for the International Cricket Council (ICC) Women’s Cricket World Cup.
The Zimbabwe team leaves tomorrow for the ICC Africa Regional Cricket World Cup qualifiers set for Nairobi, Kenya. The top two regional teams will represent Africa at the next qualifying phase to be held in Sri Lanka next year and is set from December 13 to 20.
The global showcase will be held in India in 2013. The Women’s Cricket World Cup is a women's one-day international cricket competition. The first tournament was held in England in 1973, two years before the first men's Cricket World Cup.
The Women's Cricket World Cup Qualifier, formerly the IWCC Trophy, is a cricket tournament that serves as a qualifying tournament for the Women's Cricket World Cup. It has been played once so far, in 2003, the second tournament was to take place in Lahore, Pakistan in November 2007 but was postponed due to the state of emergency in Pakistan. In January 2008 the International Cricket Council moved the tournament to Stellenbosch in South Africa.
Gunning for their maiden appearance at the global showcase, the side, coached by Alistair Zowe, play their opening match against Uganda on Tuesday. Their next assignment will be against neighbours South Africa on December 16 with a date against the hosts Kenya coming up the next day.
Zimbabwe will play their last game against the Tanzanians.
Chibhabha is captaining the Zimbabwe team for the second in the World Cup qualifiers after she led the team in December 2006 in Kenya. The 26-year old is also the first women's player to be contracted as a coach by Zimbabwe Cricket after she attained a Level 1 qualification in 2006.
Zimbabwe Cricket women co-ordinator Caroline Nyamande expressed confidence that the team will pick up one of the two slots reserved for Africa for the next qualifying round.
“This time we are going to make to the finals in India. We have done our homework and I am sure everyone is geared for the task ahead. We are not afraid of any team. We are very confident of going through to the next qualifying round and not only that, but the World Cup finals as well. Last year we missed by a whisker and that will not happen again,” she said.
The top two teams will qualify for the next round of the qualifiers to be held in Sri Lanka next year to find one continental representative for the global showcase set for India in 2013.
A good showing is expected from the great 2010 CBZ Bank female cricketer of the year Sharne Meyers who is also part of the squad. Wicketkeeper Nonhlanhla Nyathi is also on top of her game and should help in Zimbabwe’s stride to victory.
Zimbabwe finished tops in the regional qualifiers for last year’s edition, but came short in the final qualifiers held in South Africa.
Zimbabwe, making its debut, remained undefeated in a four-team qualifying tournament held in Kenya that also included Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya.
Zimbabwe beat Uganda by 63runs, Kenya by 104 runs before cruising to an 82-run victory over Tanzania in their last game to qualify for the next round of the tournament that was held in South Africa.

I believe Ashley Burdett and Sharne Mayers (who's usually a fixture of the side but not named this time around) are white.sloandog wrote:Is there any white Zimbabwean women playing ??
