Re: Possible to play For Zimbabwe

I think ZIMDOGGY hit the nail on the head with everything he said. Seriously, if you're close to age group honours in NSW then you're probably already in the top percentile of Zim cricketers your age. If you can deal with the internal politics then you'll probably make it - at the very least - to the top tier of club cricket, and probably to FC selection. I'll just pluck a name out of thin air - Remembrance Nyathi: http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/ ... 35486.html - averages 19 after 40 odd games. If you're close to NSW age group selection then sight unseen I'd wager you're a better batsman than he is. There's a number of his ilk at FC level and heaps more at club level.

In the real good old days (like the Faithwear series of 2006) - and I'm saying this with a straight face - I reckon a ragtag group of random ZCF'ers who've played at no higher level than backyard cricket or street cricket, like eugene's annual ZCF XI, would have had respectable stats in Zim domestic cricket. Honest to God there were some bonafide no-hopers playing in the domestic league back then. By comparison it's much better now, but I think Zimbabwe is by a long, long stretch the easiest country in the world to break into the FC scene.

The biggest problem will be how far $6k will go IMO. You could live like a king for a few weeks. But if you want to play internationals you'll need to support yourself for 4 years so that could be tough.

And as Jemisi said, if you go ahead with it ZCF will cheer you on. And it would be a really interesting experience for sure, Zimbabwe is a good country with good people... even if you don't get what you want out of it cricket wise, I think you'd take away some amazing memories. Good luck.

sloandog can probably give you some info on that having done some try-outs for KC a few years back from memory, or MidWest Rhinos as he worked at a franchise.

My educated guess though is that: a) a letter to ZC will go unanswered; b) you'll need to work your way up through the club ranks before harbouring any FC ambitions. Look at how relatively few senior games Burl and Murray have proportionate to their talent.

It'll probably be a sort of fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants situation when you're on the ground. As ZIMDOGGY said you'll need to be street smart. It won't be as organised or procedural as you're used to in Australia.

Well Sikandar Raza unvieled on on his twitter feed a few days back about some unknown Pakistani players coming in as overseas pros for the domestic season. To begin with, would that be a good way to sneak in a little quicker into the higher echelons of the system this season itself? - of course that would need some help from folks running the show at franchises and they should see the advantage in playing you right away. And then continue the residence and try out the usual route from next season onwards by basically playing all forms of any serious cricket that is played in the country.

May be you can choose the a region currently struggling for talent and / or more open to experiments. So, don't look at basing yourself at Harare, may be. Bulawayo / Kadoma as the base and trying to get into Tuskers / Rhinos is easier may be?

Can you please state whether you have a family link to Zimbabwe or not?

This dictates the direction and worth of all advice given.

As vaguely interesting as this thread is, if he were to ever pitch up here and get a game ahead of Diplock it would not be correct, but would be par for the course.

Haha I hope Diplock doesn't give up on cricket ! Poor guy gets overlooked for this Taibu Academy first of all, and you should see the players that have been selected. It's a farce. Secondly he can't even get back into England cause of his 2 List A games. What is he going to do? No club cricket around. I saw him the other day but don't know him well, maybe Gargamel or Sloandog could see what his future holds...

As for you PJ MOOR, who do u plan on staying with?
Do u play club cricket there? And to what standard?
It will be an experience one way or the other. These people involved in Cricket here who determine your future are bottom of the barrel human beings and are simply useless.

Who are the people selected? It might give us some "insights"...
