Well it’s going to be interesting to see if Mangongo’s two year plan will have the same backing this time around. I would think not. You have the RS gobbling money and the U19 squad doing the same, both of which I support if they’re done correctly, but both Mangongo and Taibu will tell you, if they’re brutally honest, that they don’t have much to work with, especially in the batting dept.
in theory there should be the same amount of money available for the youngsters below this and I’m sure there is, but it’s not a priority for them and never has been.
It’s absolutely where we are going wrong. That Zim Pups was a great idea but got shot down by ZC because they weren’t in control and that’s what it’s all about for them.
In a brief two years it helped players like Murray, Welch, Byrom, Curran, Curtis. Maybe it was coincidence that we had these 4 batsmen in this period, but I can certainly tell you that the additional exposure they got helped them immensely. For ZC to have blitzed this is criminal. How many guys have we seen since? I can’t think of many. These are serious cricketers in my book. The problem is ZC and their followers don’t think so, which for me is the scary part. I don’t think they have any concept of what time and effort those 4 put into their batting. They really need to pick two or three competent and enthusiastic (don’t always go hand in hand!) coaches and send them to see what’s been going on at junior level elsewhere in the world, we are lower than dog shit in comparison. The parents that got this off the ground can regale you with scarcely believable stories about what it was like dealing with the folk in ZC who were and still are in charge of youth cricket. This is where need to focus or there’s nothing in 3-4 years time. Nothing.

I know two, if not three 15 year olds who would most definitely be ready for the next U19 WC if they were given the right opportunities from today. They would be something else by the time they were 17 and they’d have another WC in them after that. You couldn’t include them just yet against anyone bowling 125 plus (do we have anyone? ), but with the right coaching they’d be more than ready next year. A smart coach with a limited player pool should be onto this. Mangongo actually picked up Shardendorf Jr early and he stayed in the mix right up to final squad selection. It might have been the right move as he possibly wasn’t quite ready mentally, there aren’t many 15 year olds that won’t wilt under a 140kph barrage but this kid stands a real chance of being a good player if he does the time and he may well score some runs at the next WC. He needs to learn how to score 100’s though, he certainly has the ability, but mentally not tough enough at the moment. Hopefully that will change.
