With pick 34 I am going with the exciting Dougie Marillier, our very own Action Jackson! I remember watching his debut series against New Zealand where he played a couple of good knocks up top, not to mention him later inventing the scoop against Australia. He may have been inconsistent but he features in many of my favourite cricketing memories. He was also useful with the ball.

Very much slim pickings now; I had born Dougie Marillier & Tendai Chisoro in mind for one of the remaining spots in my side
Very slim pickings indeed now

I don't know, I can still think of a few former mainstays that haven't been chosen. We are still a ways off selecting the Alester Maregwede's and David Mutendera's of this world.

I think we look back at guys from 90’s & early 2000’s with ‘rose coloured glasses’ guys like Marillier, Wishart, Ebrahim etc all averaged around 20 or below but are remembered as good solid players.
In comparison someone like Stuart Matsikenyeri who averaged around the same or a touch more is remembered as a quota player or a useless failure.

Quality of opposition. Granted averaging 25 against top opposition isn’t all that great. It’s Masakadza territory.jaybro wrote: ↑Sun Mar 29, 2020 9:24 pmI think we look back at guys from 90’s & early 2000’s with ‘rose coloured glasses’ guys like Marillier, Wishart, Ebrahim etc all averaged around 20 or below but are remembered as good solid players.

Stuart Matsikenyeri actually played against the best and toured Australia, England & South Africa, so I think it's fair to say his numbers compared to the likes of Wishart, Marillier & Ebrahim are fair and on an even playing field.Kriterion_BD wrote: ↑Sun Mar 29, 2020 10:31 pm

IMO both players are very similar; both were -
talented batsman who underachieved
Moved up and down the order to their detriment
Rebel saga affected their careers
Poor shot selection their biggest down fall
Retired before the best years of their careers

God this is tough. I thought about Marillier too, but at the end of the day, there are some sporadic good memories - 3 or 4. I was considering him when I ran the risk of not getting any frontline spinner, but not as an out and out top order batsman for sure.

Yeah agree. Matsi did get exposed to all quality opposition, but the only problem was, a bit too early. If they had waited till say 2006, we would have got a solid batsman who would have developed his game better away from the spotlight.
