I'll say Younis Ahmed.
A real journeyman who played for Surrey & South Australia & toured South Africa with a D. H . Robins side in the seventies. His test record is either the greatest gap in years between test appearances or the highest number of tests between appearances.
Yes, that's the man. According to this cricinfo article he has indeed the highest number of Tests between appearances (104) after he was banned for touring SA with D. H. Robins during the apartheid era.

The connection with Rhodesia/Zim is that after the tour he stayed on as club pro for Universals:
After the tour ended in December Younis agreed a three month contract to play and coach for Universal CC in what was then Rhodesia, the rewards were the same – GBP100 per week.
http://www.cricketweb.net/the-first-con ... cricketer/ (a good read)

I initially came across him in a biographical sketch about Ali Shah, written by John Ward:
The Pakistani Test player Younis Ahmed was the club professional at that time, and he did a great deal for the club, helping to turn them into an outstanding fielding team that hardly ever missed a catch. Younis gave Ali and the other youngsters a lot of encouragement, so he feels that he and the other schoolboys in the team were able to hold their heads above water playing at that level.

Universals must have had a member or two with deep pockets at that time.

Wow! That's very interesting. Had never heard about him!

This is hilarious from that Cricinfo article though!
Nobody has missed more consecutive Tests between appearances: 104, over a whopping 17 years spent serving a ban for touring South Africa. At 39, Younis came back into the hottest kitchen of all - Pakistan against India, in India. He lasted only two Tests. During the second, at Ahmedabad, he complained of back trouble, but instead of resting made his way to a discotheque. Imran Khan, the captain, made sure that it was his last game.

Hm, I don't know the comic-strip character, but when you said the next question would be easy for me ... are we talking about the forgotten Marvin John Vogel (German for bird)?

... too slow :)

Marvin Vogel?
That's correct! Former Manicaland player with 1 list A and 1 FC appearance each. You robbed foreignfield off an easy point for him there! :)

8 minutes ... but for what it's worth I can tell you now that "bird" in Shona is "shirin"

And I admired the scorecard of his only FC appearance for Manicaland in 2004, 0*, 0* and four overs for 43, for several minutes. I couldn't even remember that Hami had played for Matabeleland, opening the batting with Wisdom Siziba, let alone that Andre Soma ever scored a double century.

Here's the real Marvin Vogel, involved with the Grow Hope Trust Foundation, a Christian NGO active in Manicaland.

We see Zimbabwe as our home as Marvin grew up in Mutare and Amy lived there for six years. Marvin was a sports coach for the local schools in Mutare and Amy worked as a teacher.

Crazy stuff for sure! I'm not sure why he batted 11 and bowled only 4 over though! Was found out he was not good enough with the ball may be, but why bat at 11? He played at 7 in his only List A with some runs though. But no bowling again.

May be the Bird is that legendary leg spinner who slipped through the system...
