Now my problem is not with Asian or non Asian countries, my issue is with teams like USA, Canada, UAE, Oman who play all India-Pakistan expats.. I don't consider them to be teams at all, I like to see home grown players as in Namibia, Netherlands, Scotland, Kenya, PNG, Nepal etc... Otherwise what is the purpose of having a team. I saw Canada back in 2011 WC, I don't think even a single player was home grown.

I like Nepal, at least they have home grown players.

ICC often tries to get a lot of Asian countries as they see more 'market' in these places. For example ICC can make groups to ensure UAE and Oman get through to target a bigger audience in the Middle East.

ICC's interest in USA is also to target the large Asian population that now exists in the country.

That's isn't an issue England team for so many years have played with quite a few South African Aussie born players now they have also hunted players from New Zealand & Barbados. Sikh community can't be considered as indian contingent as they nearly exist in every nation with certain % of population.Hope Asians plays an important role in comming years to bring local players into the game in these nations. Asians has raised the game, creating interest in crowds, which other continents have failed and ICC needs to consider it. Profit is everything for ICC and therefore Asian cricket is quite ahead then other continents and stadiums filled with crowds in associate nation games will certainly attract ICC

Most of the English players currently though besides Archer and Morgan learnt their cricket in England. Guys like Stokes, Roy etc learnt their cricket in England. I know previously, this was much more abundant but I dont think it was a good thing. Its better now. Anyway, this current English team is unlike countries like Oman where most of the guys are India or Pakistan u19 players. We dont want to see cricket being confined to just the subcontinent and countries like Namibia, Png etc doing well as opposed to Oman would mean much more growth for the game.
Yes and our Asia Cup cricket at every level has played an important role in creating interest for the game in associate nations.Asian full members havent neglected to play Sri Lanka, Bangladesh when they were not full member even not against Afghans most recently. Hong Kong, UAE, Nepal etc fans enjoys neighbour rivalry culture in the game. In Europe or in Africa such concept is not there, Kenya / Namibia or Nigeria hardly get chance to play against South Africa or Zim. There is huge difference in playing with national team and with A or Select XI, high performance side whereas in Asia associates gets chance to play full members whenever there is Asia Cup taking place with gap of 2 years.

You are right, yes they have played a crucuial part in creating intrest for the game. But I do not see much interest from the natives apart from Nepal who I hope will get to the stage of Afg soon. Even with the relative success of the game in these Arab countries, it isnt the Arabs playing in the team. Its foreigners, mercenaries. Look at Anushman Rath. Did well against India and immediately left Hong Kong to try play for them. I dont think the neighbour rivalry culture is as strong as you say. As for Namibia etc not playing much against SA/Zim, Namibia in particular will start playing more, no doubt about it. As for Kenya and the other countries, they play lots with countries on their level. With time, they will get good enough.

Raj, India of all countries have been particularly poor in contributing towards growing the game during the last 15 years since we became a force. I will say things as they are.

Back in the 90s India were not a force, it remember we played Zim, Ken, Bang and were actually liked all around the world.

In the last 10 years especially, India have just limited playing to Australia and England on a repeat mode. We don't even care about inviting Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Ireland, Afghanistan for a home series. Haven't played Pakistan since 2007, althoygh I understand that is due to political reasons.

You tell me how many games India have played against Hong Kong, UAE, Nepal, Oman, Afghanistan till date? Even include Bangladesh. Unless they are forced games in ICC events. You can count Asia Cup. Literally nothing.

Absolutely correct. BCCI should'nt have allowed these sort of players in domestic cricket same goes to Kiwis allowing Chapman playing for NZ.Nepal & Hong Kong has been flourish and then faded away sides. When it comes to Arab they are more interested in becomming good host and earning lot then developing the game, prime example is the UAE, became associate member in 1989 represented twice in World Cups still havent managed to go the next level inspite of having infrastructure like full members

India visited Zimbabwe 4 times since 2010 and also played few world cup games against Zim.Yes you can complain, India havent invited Zim for long time and the scheduled tour has been postponed. But India played Bangladesh quite few times most recently and have also hosted Bangladesh in Test & T20s. Afghanistan Series against India to be finalized very soon

India played less with associates but through Asia Cup twice a year atleast they plays with associates whereas in other continent even such concept is not there say a Africa Cup or Eurpoean T20 so that teams like SA face Kenya or team like Jersey face England. Hence there is least chance for the associates growing the game. You can find Asia Cup not only in international level but also in Under 23 & Under 19 level so in one or other way still development is going on, which you hardly find in Europe or in Africa

Just want to dive in here on one point from the previous page and say we need to be careful with the whole ‘native’ language and ‘asian players’ stuff. Because we sometimes in that discourse aren’t a million miles away from the original couple being the same as ‘white Zimbabweans arent native’ or something.

There’s nothing wrong with minorities being involved in the game in these countries to an extent. Look at the Oman team - and it annoys me that no Omanis play the game and they haven’t really ‘developed’ the game yet. But equally, that cricket board didn’t have a penny 4 or 5 years ago and apart from this World Cup, it still doesn’t. It hasn’t ‘paid’ or ‘hunted’ any of its players. All of the Oman players are semi-pro with normal jobs in Oman outside of cricket. Remember these Middle Eastern countries have relatively few ‘natives’ anyway and huge expat populations. The UAE team being all indian/Pakistani heritage is actually very representative of the country....

The same goes for HK. I lived there for a short while and knew a few players and admins and hung out at HKCC. You might not see a Chinese player in the team but the overwhelming majority of the ‘non-natives’ are actually HK born or bred, or lived there since a kid and you’d be surprised how many of their players speak fluent Chinese.

With European associates - none of these smaller boards pay any of their players anything. The brown people playing for them are genuinely living in these countries and have full time non cricket jobs. The fact that Germany or Bulgaria or any of these other random associates are full of Indians/Pakistanis isn’t something we should bash really. Europe is really diverse and often I think a lot of sub continent posters / social media users dont understand that. Germany has a massive immigrant population. So are we going to ban then from playing cricket?!?! Of course not.

The USA are the ones I really hate because they are one of the very very few that actually are openly BUYING players from overseas. That’s wrong. I hope they fail although I suspect they won’t.

So yeah, let’s be careful talking about ‘natives’ or the ‘wrong colour’ playing for some of these countries. It’s pretty close to home considering the issue with race and minorities in Zimbabwe.

Yeah when I was replying, I was really struggling to get my thoughts out in a non-racist manner. Possibly there was a little bit of racism there. Anyway, one thing I want to pick out from what you said is the UAE being all indian is very representative. One thing I think I read before is that football is the most popular sport in the UAE. Why is the team full of Emirati Arabs? Seems statistically unlikely that just what 10% make up the entire team. I understand thats similar to ZImbabwe cricket or was at least. But at that stage cricket wasnt popular with the BLack community so the ethnic composition made sense. In this case it doesnt though.

Man these pitches are grim. Are we really going to have three weeks of 120-130 being a par score? Don't think thats what the majority of fans want in T20's tbh.

I dont mind. Low scoring thrillers are always fun to watch. Hopefully this isnt gonna be something where team who chases always wins

Fair enough, and that SA/Oz game was indeed a low scoring thriller and pretty entertaining!!

I still think most people want to see bigger scores and hitting though!
