Weirdest or funniest Zim cricket stories you remember

Post by brmtaylor.com admin »

There's just so much subject matter here.

I'll kick off with this for a weird one:

The guy who deserves a few mentions is Dumisani Mankunzini. May have played a game for Tuskers (who else, its not expensive!), managed to pass himself off as an ICC representative and managed to interview quite a few well known international players- presumably with a rented cameraman and mike, has conned dozens of people out of significant money, now has decided he's a Doctor, but not quite sure of what and was finally in custody before Xmas, but no doubt will be out and back to his usual shenanigans very soon.

Innocent was clearly guilty.

Yes, not much can beat the Mankunzini escapades. Not even the Vermeulen episodes.

But Zim cricket is littered with crazy stories - the recent Musakanda hit-and-run episode, the Maruma case, two of the biggest names in the country's cricketing history getting embroiled in corruption scandals (for what - 2 bitcoins and some weed?), Taibu being chased out the first time around, the Darlington Matambanadzo story, Flowers and Whittalls allegedly ganging up against the then coach David Houghton, Marilliar's accident as a kid and then still going onto play internationally, Gary Crocker's test debut and how he barely made it to HSC...

I'm trying to find it, but not getting it on the Internet. He was a very last minute inclusion to the inaugural Zim test (due to someone's injury) and had to drive overnight from Bulawayo to HSC with scary road conditions - to reach in time to make debut. He had described the whole thing well in some article.

Ok here's a current one-
Rhinos dropped Byrom in favor of Naqvi, or perhaps Carlson actually.
That's a tough call- Byrom is a Zimbo and there's a chance that one day he will want to come back, should be making him feel a bit more welcome than that. He hasn't done much this season, which is a big surprise, I thought he'd plunder, but its only the half way mark. If Carlson now makes runs does Byrom sit out again?
Hard to argue about keeping Naqvi after a 4fer and a 100, but everyone knows the deal with this guy, doesn't sit well with a lot of people.

Carlson is playing better so deserved to keep his spot, Byrom has done okay and nothing special so far in the first class format this season.

The annoying thing is that the rhinos have 3 overseas players. This should never have been allowed (unless 1 went home early).

This Naqvi guy is clearly a class player but he shouldn’t be in that Rhinos squad.

If I was Byrom I would be pretty pissed off with the situation.

That's why they had to drop either Carlson or Byrom, they didn't buy their spot.
It's early to say he's a class player. There is absolutely no danger that he's better than Byrom.
