Strongest team

Post by brmtaylor.com admin »

What would your Zimbabwe XI be of players still playing First Class cricket.

Exceptions are Heath Streak (because if it weren't for ICL he would still be playing county) and Mark Vermeulen (because he would be playing Logan Cup if it weren't for ZC)

Mine would be:

1. Grant Flower
2. Brendan Taylor
3. Murray Goodwin
4. Tatenda Taibu (wk)
5. Graeme Hick
6. Sean Williams
7. Mark Vermeulen
8. Sean Ervine
9. Elton Chigumbura
10. Heath Streak (capt)
11. Ray Price

A solid mix between experience (Flower, Goodwin, Hick!!, Streak and Price) and the young members of the current squad (Taylor, Taibu, Williams, Chigumbura).

Also, had Graeme Hick played Test cricket for Zimbabwe (and not left because of political reasons) he would have played about 80 Tests or so? Perhaps about 300 ODI's. He would have made about 8000 Test runs, averaging somewhere between 50 and 60. Ah, what could have been.

That side of yours is somewhat short on bowling. Ervine has had injury problems, and his bowling isn't what it used to be. Hick doesn't really count either, so I'd replace him with Utseya, or Ireland, depending on conditions.

True, but Zimbabwe have few Test quality bowlers besides Ray Price and Heath Streak. You have to consider whether someone like Anthony Ireland would concede less runs than say Sean Ervine would score. If I had to add an extra bowler, I'd probably replace Ervine with Brent. In reality though, had there been no political influences, Graeme Hick and Grant Flower (most likely) would have retired from international cricket, and Murray Goodwin left before the chaos began anyway, so guys like Masakadza and Utseya would naturally be in the side.

mine would be

1.H.Masakadza
2.B.Taylor
3.M.Goodwin
4.T.Taibu
5.S.Williams
6.S.Ervine
7.E.Chigumbura
8.H.Streak
9.P.Utseya
10.R.Price
11.A.Ireland

I think this would be zims strongest and most exciting team. I have chosen a young team cause i feel that Flower hick and co are getting on abit and i assume will be retiring in the next year or so. This side has a perfect balance as there is a good mix of young and experienced players. In this side there are 4 good seamers with Ireland and Streak opening the attack with chigumbura first change then Ervine. The battling lineup looks strong and bats right down to 10
