Zim a very ominous 8-3 off 4 overs.

Pakistan are always absolutely elite at U19 level, but their seamers are clearly a full level above what most of the Zim lads are capable of dealing with. Muyambo and Makoni completely blown away, and K Blignaut wafted behind first ball.

That one seamer is choppers. U can mostly prepare for pace these days with sidearm.

Prepare, for sure.

Make yourself capable of playing against people who are seemingly much better at cricket than you?... not so much.

The contrast between the first 5 overs of each innings has been painful to see. The skillset disparity is night and day.

42 ball 100 from their opener.

I reckon this Pakistan U19 side would defeat all of the Franchises. The seamers in this group are definitely better than those playing franchise as overseas players.

If you look at the u19 Asia Cup scorecard you will see that same guy blasted over 170 against India in the final. Lethal batsman. Got a feeling they have a chance to win the world cup.

Yeah, I know. He's class.

They're always in with a shout at U19 World Cups. Truly elite at junior level. At least our guys have got a solid look at what really-good looks like. Hopefully it will serve to sharpen their understanding of how hard they will need to work to make it at the top level.

Its not really a question of working hard to become an elite cricketer and batsman specifically. Its just a piece of the jigsaw. Hard work does not beat talent and a bit of work. It may have years ago, but with the volume of sportsmen and what's at stake now you have to have raw talent.

Here's the list of requirements-
You have to be astonishingly good as a youngster, with some serious numbers and 100's under your belt.
You need a quality coach, ideally a personal one.
You need a support network.
You need to play up age groups.
You need to be mentally tough.
Ideally you need to be playing some form of men's cricket at 15 or 16 and holding your own.
Then of course you need to be in a system that recognizes that ability and work ethic and doesn't delight in fucking your life up because of the colour of your skin, your tribe, your political affiliation or your province.

ZC have put a lot into this WC, certainly in terms of volume. Boys have even gone to India, but I can't attest to the quality of coaching, simply because I don't know. The good coaches I do know are nowhere near ZC structures. Every quality international batter has had that one dedicated coach as a junior that has invested serious personal one on one time. Some generic coach overseeing some net time whilst on his phone and talking to his mate is a waste of space.

It's what doesn't happen in the junior age groups that's letting us down. It is completely and utterly impossible to play catch-up when players get to 16-18. Theyre just going thru the motions. They have to though, but it's going to have a nil return. Nil! Zero!
If this worked you could produce a world class golfer or tennis player at the drop of a hat. It just can't happen. You have to have that one kid who's the one percenter and then you have to do everything right from there, and its still far from a guarantee. And a kid of that calibre is not going to put himself thru all of that for $400 a month.

ZC are going to keep punting the guys that they want to be good at the expense of the guys with a higher ceiling that are better. One more time for the slow folks- the return is ZERO!!!

The hard yards are a necessary, but not sufficient, condition. Obviously.
