Waller Named ZC Manager
Thursday, 23 April 2009 20:17

ZIMBABWE Cricket have made another addition to their coaching structures by appointing former national team opening batsman Andy Waller as national coaching manager.

Waller, 49, will be responsible for supervising domestic coaching structures and setting up high performance centres in the various provinces.

Waller’s appointment comes a month after that of his former Zimbabwe teammate Dave Houghton, who in his role as director of national coaching will be technical director to national team coaches.

Waller, who made his Test debut at the age of 37 against England back in 1996, was an entertaining right-handed opening batsman and outstanding fielder. He played two Tests and 39 ODIs. He represented Zimbabwe in three World Cups in 1987, 1992 and 1996.

Waller has also coached the Namibian national side.

His son Malcolm has settled well in the Zimbabwe team after an impressive debut tour to Bangladesh and Kenya.

Meanwhile, IndependentSport has learnt that the ZC dissolved the board’s cricket committee at its last meeting on April 3. A source said a new committee to include “people with playing experience will be announced soon”.

The ZC board is also in the process of making two additions to the national selectors panel.

Andy Waller takes Zimbabwe coaching role

Former opening batsman Andy Waller has been named as Zimbabwe's new coaching manager. His previous experience includes a spell as coach of Namibia.

Waller, who played two Tests and 39 ODIs, will be responsible for supervising domestic coaching structures and setting up high-performance centres across the country.

His appointment follows that of Dave Houghton, who will be part-time director of national coaching.

As a more general shake-up of the game's structure continues, the Independent reported that earlier this month the Zimbabwe board dissolved its cricket committee and would be replacing it with a new body made up of "people with playing experience will be announced soon".

Well, following the ICC report on Zimbabwean Cricket,it's really a good move.Must be appreciated.People with international playing experience in the cricket committee can take the cricket on high,in a new dimention.

It's good to see that Zimbabwe is very much desperate to return in the test fold as soon as possible.I also think that it's not a long way for Zim to return in the test format with players returning and since competitive cricket is played in Zim.

We can look at the options of players with international playing experience living in Zimbabwe: (thanks brmtaylor.com admin)

1.Heath Streak (Age 35) > Resigned in 2005.Now works in family business.Plays for Ahmedabad Rockets in ICL.I guess, that can be a problem for his selection.

2.Stuart Carlisle (Age 36) > Retired in 2005.Now works in family business.Probably,Carlisle plays cricket in a social league in Zimbabwe just for fun.

3.Craigh Wishart (Age 35) > Retired in 2005.He is employed in Zimbabwe.

4.Guy Whittal (Age 37) > He announced his retirement after World Cup 2003 at the age of 31 to concentrate on his family's game-ranch business. He is a professsional hunter in
Zimbabwe.

5.Trevor Gripper (Age 34) > He left ZC in 2005.He is employed in Zimbabwe, runs a business in Zimbabwe and plays cricket in a social league in Zimbabwe just for fun.

Also due to be two additions to the selection panel.

I'd take a punt on Alastair Campbell being named somewhere along the way. He's worked with the current board in the past and he has the necessary experience.
