UPDATE: India *DON'T* cancel Zimbabwe tour

Great
BCCI's attitude is pathetic: ""The visit to Zimbabwe was planned but has been dropped now as it was to involve three teams. They will have to find the third team for the series to be held," BCCI secretary N Srinvasan said in Mumbai [Images] on Wednesday."

No apology, no mention of it being held at a later date. Just "they will have to find a third team". Zimbabwe has been shafted. We already know South Africa were still no certainty for the series, and without India I'd say it makes South Africa's inclusion even less likely (why would they want to play a team like Kenya - who would probably be the third team - again?).

I'd say this leaves the series on the verge of cancellation to be honest. Get ready for a long winter, I don't think we'll be playing much cricket until the Bangladesh series. Very disappointing news :(

No money in it for the BCCI unless there's a third side, you see - and we all know that money is all that drives them. Because this wasn't an FTP-mandated series, there's nothing to stop them abandoning their commitment.

I wonder if ZC will now think again about continuing to give the BCCI all the support at the ICC that they've given them over the years, after this slap in the face...

India cancel plans to tour Zimbabwe

Cricinfo staff

April 29, 2009

The BCCI has decided to cancel India's planned tour of Zimbabwe scheduled for later in the year, giving the Indian cricketers a break ahead of September's ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa. The tour of Zimbabwe was scheduled to take place after India's short ODI series in West Indies following the ICC World Twenty20 in June.

"The visit to Zimbabwe was planned but has been dropped now as it was to involve three teams. They will have to find the third team for the series to be held," BCCI secretary N Srinvasan said. South Africa were announced as the third team for the triangular series by Srinivasan in a media communication earlier but Cricket South Africa stated it had never planned to participate in the proposed event.

India's cricketers are currently involved in the IPL, and will then take part in the ICC World Twenty20 in England, running from June 5 to 21. "We will have a ODI series afterwards in the West Indies, comprising four or five matches, and then will take part in the ICC Champions Trophy," Srinivasan said. He also announced India's rather packed playing schedule following the team's return from South Africa.

India will host the Champions Twenty20 League - cancelled last year in the aftermath of the Mumbai terror attacks - and play a seven-match ODI series against Australia at home. Sri Lanka are scheduled to visit India for a full Test and ODI series, after which India would tour Bangladesh in January. "On our return we would host South Africa," Srinivasan said.

Besides the good news coming through, the only bad news is gotten in the point of international matches/tours abondence. I reckon Zimbabwe is facing lack of international cricket which isn't good for overall cricket prospective. Zimbabwe is out of international cricket for a while after the Kenya series. But Zimbabwe has to play international matches.

The postpond seems to be temporary until Zimbabwe finds a third team for the tri series. Since the other cricket nations are pre-occupied in the month of June/July, I predict Zimbabwe has to confirm an associate side like Kenya, a strong possibility.

MUMBAI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said it has not cancelled the proposed visit to Zimbabwe for a triangular series later this year, but has only put the onus on the host to find the third team.

“The BCCI is committed to sending a team to Zimbabwe. It is the responsibility of Zimbabwe Cricket to invite and confirm the participation of a third team. The tour will take place after that happens,” BCCI Secretary N. Srinivasan said in a media release. India was slated to visit Zimbabwe after the ODI series in the West Indies. — PTI

I misinterpreted the first article (I think it still was quite ambiguous though)... it seems India will tour Zimbabwe after all. But the condition is that they find a third team.

AND they should find a third team.Zimbabwe can't let this schedule to be postpond for the non-appearance of the third team for the triangular series or they will be out of international matches for quite a long time.

So, Zimbabwean cricket authority is compelled to find and confirm a third team for the tri series as soon as possible to make the scheduled tri series possible.
