Twenty20 bonanza comes to Bulawayo
THE shortest version of the game, fast taking over the global attention has not spared Zimbabwe domestic calendar with the provincial teams fighting it out in Bulawayo at Queens Sports Club and Bulawayo Athletics Club from Wednesday with finals set for Saturday.
The undisputed kings of the local game Easterns coached by the enigmatic Steven Mangongo set the ball rolling against Westerns at Queens on Wednesday at the same time Northerns and Centrals battle it out at BAC.
Easterns, fresh from winning the Logan Cup last Friday take on Westerns that finished the competition without a win square off from 0930hrs to 1230hrs with the second match featuring the bitterest rivals Northerns and Easterns at BAC from 1400hrs while Centrals and Northerns play at Queens till 1700hrs.
Thursday sees Northerns take on Westerns at Queens in the morning at the same time Centrals engage Easterns at BAC, the same venue that will host Easterns and Westerns in the afternoon while Queens will play host to Northerns and Centrals
Northerns and Easterns then engage each other on Friday morning at Queens while Centrals play Westerns at BAC as the battle for top finish gets into top gear in this the latest arrival from the cricket locker rooms. Its popularity is in the 20 overs where players do it in no time and tend to favour the brave.
In the afternoon Northerns and Westerns fight it out at BAC with Easterns and Centrals slogging it out in Queens to see who finishes in the top two. The teams finishing third and fourth on the log will play in the morning to determine the third and fourth placing while the top two battles it out for the champions prize.
The losing finalist automatically becomes second. The shorter version of the game attracts crowds who want to watch a quick match and with T20 they get all their money back as they get both the excitement and the game. The final is on Saturday at Queens in the afternoon after the wooden spoon battle for third and fourth in the morning.

Twenty20 cricket tourney explodes into life
By Mehluli Sibanda
THE domestic season-ending Twenty20 cricket tournament gets underway at Queens Sports Club and Bulawayo Athletic Club this morning with thrills expected during the four-day event.
A visit to the two venues yesterday showed that the grounds were in good condition and ready for the event. The event promises to be full of excitement on and off the field with lots of entertainment lined up for the whole family.
Home side Westerns who arrived on Saturday at the end of the Logan Cup first class competition in Harare trained at Queens Sports Club yesterday at a session conducted by assistant coach Stanley Timoni. Top order batsman Mark Vermeulen and coach Clement Mahachi did not train with the team as they were on their way from Harare.
Easterns, Centrals and Northerns were expected to arrive from Harare late yesterday afternoon.
A lot would be anticipated from a Westerns side that put up a dismal show during the Logan Cup where they did not win even a single match and the best they could manage was a draw against Centrals in the last match.
Vermeulen, Charles Coventry, Sean Williams, Mbekezeli Mabuza, Keith Dabengwa and Tafadzwa Ngulube are the key batsmen for Westerns whose performance with the bat would determine the team's show.
Skipper Tawanda Mupariwa leads the bowling attack with fellow seamers Christopher Mpofu, Njabulo Ncube while John Nyumbu and Dabengwa could also play a pivotal role in the bowling department.
Westerns take on Easterns in the first match at Queens Sports Club this morning before they clash with Centrals at the same venue.
For Easterns who have been a dominant force in provincial competitions this season, skipper Hamilton Masakadza should form a strong batting order with Stuart Matsikenyeri, Foster Mutizwa and Johnson Marumisa. Shingirai Masakadza leads the bowling attack that also has spinners Prosper Utseya and leg spinner Tymicen Maruma.
Northerns who entertain Centrals at Bulawayo Athletic Club and then take on Easterns also at BAC bank on former national team captain Tatenda Taibu who got over the disappointment of being snubbed for the second edition of the Indian Premier League to put up a sterling performance in the Logan Cup. Taibu should combine well with Elton Chigumbura, Price Masvaure and Cephas Zhuwawo.
Chigumbura has an added responsibility of taking the new ball and should form a deadly bowling attack with fellow pace bowlers Admire Manyumwa, Trevor Garwe while Raymond Price and Graeme Cremer who were in terrific form during the Logan Cup make up the slow bowling options.
Chamunorwa Chibhabha, Malcolm Waller, Eric Chauluka, Friday Kasteni, Bothwell Chapungu and Remembrance Nyathi make up the Centrals top order. Brian Vittori and Tafadzwa Kamungozi are the key bowlers for Centrals who like Westerns struggled during the Logan Cup.
Fixtures
Today, Westerns v Easterns (Queens Sports Club), Northerns v Centrals (Bulawayo Athletic Club), Northerns v Easterns (Bulawayo Athletic Club), Westerns v Centrals (Queens Sports Club).
