Dissecting the 3rd ODI

Post by zimfan1 »

A good win today for the boys to get back into the series with a much improved batting effort with the innings built around a powerfull knock by Madakasza who made a timely return to form with his first ODI century.Tylor played the innings of the day for me by just nudging the ball into the gaps and set it up for Chigumbura at the end

The pace bowling was much better with Muparwira proving a good move to bring into the side and Price did what he does best by tying up an end and getting wickets through pressure. But a concern still has to be the 5th bowler, Waller did an ok job but Madakasza looked way of the pace and Utseyas performance both will ball and captancy was not impressive.

A good win but Bangladesh will come back hard on sunday and we cannot afford to let them back into the game like we did today

First of all let me say congratulations to the team for a great win today.

I am very concerned about Prosper Utseya. I am not even sure he should be in the team (perhaps Graeme Cremer is a better option) let alone the captain. Ray Price should be the captain in my opinion. Another concern is the bowling in general. We really need five frontline bowlers.

My team is as thus;

1. Mark Vermeulen
2. Hamilton Masakadza
3. Sean Williams
4. Charles Coventry
5. Brendan Taylor (w)
6. Malcolm Waller
7. Elton Chigumbura
8. Ray Price (c)
9. Graeme Cremer
10. Tawanda Mupariwa
11. Ed Rainsford
Neil Johnson, Alistair Campbell, Murray Goodwin, Andy Flower (w), Grant Flower, Dave Houghton, Guy Whittall, Heath Streak (c), Andy Blignaut, Ray Price, Eddo Brandes

Well the team above cannot happen. This would just end up as wishful thinking :)

Agree with zimfan1. Taylor's was the innings of the day. He held the batting together by rotating the strike and not taking any risk whatsoever. Very similar role to what Williams played in the last match. Masakadza looked solid the when he defended the first ball he faced today, and as suspected ended up with that much needed biggie. And Chiggs was there as icing on the cake. In fact, a lot more than just icing.

Mupariwa and Price were on top of their game with the ball, and with Chiggs giving able support, it was always going to be tough for Bangladeshis. Waller was decent, till he went for plenty in his last over, but Utseya really is the concern. He never looked at his best. Hope he comes good in the next game.

The only problem in todays convincing win was 5th bowler spot.

6. Malcolm Waller

One change from above for me, Matsikenyeri has done enough to keep his place ahead of Waller. But Matsi will bat at 7.

Isn't it good to see these selection headaches!!!

Still we have to incorporate Taibu and Mutizwa for future series. This all augurs well for state of ZC.

By the way, how was the bowling of Waller today, apart from those 3 sixes? Actually i went on celebrating prematurely :D

Nothing special. Not a very fluent action for an offie, but filled in nicely until that one big over.

Well done Masakadza, Taylor with the bat and Mupariwa with the ball getting his 1st match in the series. Also full marks to Chigumbura for his extra-ordinary all round performance.

Again, changes are needed for the 4th ODI. Zimbabwe must consider 5th bowling option. They can't go with part-timers as 5th bowler. Masakadza and Waller have given away 92 runs in 12 overs !

As for Waller's bowling, he bowled well in my opinion if we cut the big over of 21 runs.

I will go with this Zimbabwean XI for 4th ODI:

In: Cremer
Out: Sibanda

1. Mark Vermeulen
2. Hamilton Masakadza
3. Charles Coventry
4. Brendan Taylor (WK)
5. Sean Williams (if fit) or Malcolm Waller
6. Elton Chigumbura
7. Stuart Matsikenyeri
8. Prosper Utseya
9. Raymond Price
10. Tawanda Mupariwa
11. Graeme Cremer
