Post by CrimsonAvenger »

Here is an article I compiled about none other than the Enigma himself, Mark Vermeulen:

A nice article but i would be more happy had you not posted the video and Mark's hand-cuffed picture. It hurted as i am a big Vermulen fan.I would request the readers to must read this article by Liam Brickhill on CricInfo-

http://www.cricinfo.com/zimbabwe/conten ... 60522.html

"In a country in which racial and political tensions are a fact of everyday life, it was heart-warming to witness the sight of a young, white male(Vermulen) from an affluent Harare family in his element, and loving every minute of it, among black children who would be bussed back to one of the capital city's sprawling, poverty-stricken townships after the game. It took only one thing to break down the racial, economic and age boundaries between Vermeulen and those children: cricket.
This not only gives a flicker of hope for the future of Zimbabwe cricket, and the country at large; it also offers an insight into his open, care-free attitude off the field, and the supremely privileged place cricket holds in his life. "

He also helped to rebuild the academy.

Yes indeed the video is a bit disturbing, but I wanted to emphasize on the change that has taken place, in terms of mental maturity. Hope he remains physically and metally fit enough to represent Zim for years to come.

I think the recovery Mark has shown in the last year has been remarkable and should be an inspiration for people who have been given a second chance.

However after watching him in the first 3 ODI's i still have worries about him as he appears a bit aloof from his team mates and has moments madness such as running between the wickets. I just hope that Zimbabwe cricket are looking after him and giving him help to make sure he does not have a relapse of his previous problems.

For me, Mark has been very fit even after the gap of 5 years from international cricket. But he needs to improve his running between the wicket.

Yes, I also have noticed that he is a bit separate from his team-mates. I guess, he just needs some time to settle down. In the 3rd ODI, he took 3 catches also and I think the 2nd one was a bit tough too but he managed to grab it. I really want to see a good innings from Mark like the 1st ODI.

From the article:
In 2004, while playing club cricket in the Central Lancashire League at UK, his recent failures with the bat had already got to him.
It was in 2006, not in 2004.
