HEATH Streak — the new Zimbabwe team bowling coach — acknowledges the team’s bowling resources need boosting, yet maintains that the bowlers’ errant performance against Bangladesh was a minor flaw.
Former national team captain and fast bowler Streak was this week unveiled as Zimbabwe assistant coach, specialising in bowling.
The 35-year-old’s appointment, ending a long-standing dispute with ZC, is part of the board’s restructuring of the coaching department which is expected to see incumbent head coach Walter Chawaguta revert back to an understudy role under a more experienced mentor.
“We have to look at where the problem was, whether it was technical or mental,” Streak told IndependentSport yesterday.
“We obviously batted well, but maybe the guys felt the wicket was flat and tough to bowl on. The bowlers bowled too many bad balls which were too easy for the batsmen to put away to the boundary. But look, it’s not a major thing. This can be rectified.”
With more players on the verge of returning to the Zimbabwe fold, Streak revealed some of the names lined up.
“Tinashe Panyangara is playing well in England and he is a guy we are looking to come back. I believe Gary Brent is coaching and he’s another guy who can come in a coaching role. And we will also be trying to talk to people like Anthony Ireland and Sean Ervine to return.
Streak, a hugely popular figure in Zimbabwean cricket during his playing days, played 65 Tests and 189 ODIs for the country as a frontline bowler and capable middle-order batsman.
He said of his new job: “It’s obviously a different role from playing. To be honest, it will be a bit frustrating to sit on the side and rely on the guys on the field. But I look forward to it, I look forward to be part of the team.”
He added that despite losing the Bangladesh series 4-1, the team exhibited great potential. “Look, there were a lot of positives,” he said. “We mustn’t lose sight of the fact that we had a guy who equalled a world record. That alone if proof of the ability in the team. There were a few cameo knocks as well. Hamilton Masakadza got his maiden ODI century.”
Streak emphasized the importance of fast bowling in the progression of the team, naming Elton Chigumbura as a key man in that area.
“Elton is one player with potential to become an even better cricketer. He has ability to be one of Zimbabwe’s representative at the IPL. As an all-rounder he has class. As a bowler he has ability to bowl quick. I hope we can work on him becoming an even quicker bowler consistently.
“We do have a healthy spin department. (But) One of the things I foresee is to develop players who can bowl 85 miles per hour consistently.

I really cant see Sean Ervine returning as if he does he will loose his Kolpak contract with Hampshirezimfan1 wrote:“Tinashe Panyangara is playing well in England and he is a guy we are looking to come back. But really hoping that Panyangara and Ireland will return, im fairly sure Ireland will as this is his last year of his contract at Gloustershire and i have not seen anything in the press about it being renewed.
Re: Streak Speaks on new job
It would be great to have Panyangara, Ireland, and Ervine back. I wouldn't underestimate the influence Heath Streak may have over Zimbabwean cricketers, remember 15 of them out their careers on the line for him.
Neil Johnson, Alistair Campbell, Murray Goodwin, Andy Flower (w), Grant Flower, Dave Houghton, Guy Whittall, Heath Streak (c), Andy Blignaut, Ray Price, Eddo Brandes

It's now upto streak & campbell to bring back all players who self got retirement from Zimbabwe cricket under the leadership of streak. Specially Blignaut, Ervine, Friend, Goodwin, Marillier,Graper and some other who can still play for their country & bring their country back on wining tracks. Because these are the two men who can give those players confident & faith & bring the contracts to them. They might have still contacted to each other as friendly purposes. So the job is started for both & specially for streak that how he convince to th rebels to play for Zimbabwe. Good luck Streak much difficult job but I have sure that you will do it nicely.
Good luck Zimbabwe

Re: Streak Speaks on new job
Good to see that Heath Streak is completely up for the job and started to set his plannings and methods for the future.
As far as the returning players prospect is concerned, I guess Panyangara can definitely return. He quit as he wasn't treated well by ZC during his injury time. He quit for anger and I don't find any reason why can't be sorted out.
Ireland can return also. He hasn't appeared much in the recent matches of Gloucestershire CCC as far as I have seen.
I agree with zimfan1, I also suspect Sean Ervine won't return. He made it crystal clear that he will never return to Zimbabwe to play cricket and he is qualifying for England right now. I also hope that I am proved wrong in this matter.
EDIT: Just checked. Ireland played a List A match against Hampshire CCC in August 25th. He bowled 3 overs giving 21 runs but with no wicket.

I think it will be a great thing to get some of the "old" players back. With the way some of the current player have developed I think things will only get better for Zimbabwe Cricket. ZC also has to seriously consider the Coaching post. Chawaguta lacks the expirience of playing at the highest level. I hope the likes of Dave Houghton can come back into the picture. Even Robin Brown to some extent I think he did a wonderful job with the boys. Its good to see the likes of Virleon, Mutendera, Rennie coming into the picture playing various roles. Its surely better than having some unknowns with no cricketing history.
CHRISTOPHER MPOFU: 'The problem was fear of failure. I used to think that when I played, if I didn't do well in one game, I would lose my place for the next one but now I've let go of that'

Re: Streak Speaks on new job
It's great to see heath streak settling into his new job. Good to see also that he has plans to draw back some of the ex players. I personally feel if only 2 men could convince any of the 15 " rebel " players to return, Streak and Campbell are those 2 men.
Will be intersting to see waether or not Sean Ervine will be willing 2 give zim cricket another shot, though i highly doubt it as he's in a quallifying period.
If Streaky can bring back players such as Freiend, Marrliar, Blignaut Panyangara etc, then there's a good chance that zim cricket could once again be a more than competative unit.
With the backing staff of Campbell, Houghton, Rennie, and possibly Waller, things look on the up for zimbabwe.
