Masakadza wong choice for captain: Muchinjo

Post by Conant »

I love how the journos air their opinions as matter of fact.

I this case, Daily News Enopck Muchinjo, who has written some pretty memorable pieces, most notably about Brighton Watambwa a few years ago and recently the one about Trevor Madondo and Everton Matambanadzo - argues that the recently anointed Hamilton Masakadaza is absolutely the wrong choice for catain, because, wait for it - he smiles too much!

The most successful captains, he writes, have been the grumpiest of fellas: Graeme Smith, Allan Border, Mike Atheron, etc.

Also, he says Hamilton is too old to be captain; he should be left to enjoy his last years of cricket.

Shouldn't his relatively vast age and maturity be a plus, fellas?

Thirdly he says, his form deserts him time and again and notes the time when he was dropped twice before the World Cup, never mind that both times were a travesty of justice, most cruelly four years ago by the blithering Alastair Campbell.

They were supposed to "gamble" with a younger man, he says. I rest my case.

All Zim batsman loose form consistently so won't cop that .....

Hami being too cheerful or not grumpy enough !!! Really ? That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard .....

Age being a factor maybe if the selectors were looking for a long term captain, but our captains never last that long so again no point there ......

I stand to be corrected but I doubt hami has the attitude to be a captain for Zimbabwe. I am one of his biggest critics as he has shown reluctance and a firm stance as a leader of the team.In his favor he is highly respected and has the brains and knowledge of the Zimbabwean team, its players , the politics and international cricket as a whole. The cons in my opinion are that in the past he has been reluctant and has shied away from being the full time captain. Hami for all intents and purposes is a people person and to friendly to be taken seriously by his team mates. The timing of his selection comes at the worst time as he has just returned to the squad and in a solid purple patch in a world cup year which in my opinion tends to burden the most talented batsman and in Zimbabwes case its Hamilition. The captaincy should have been given to someone who will bridge the gap between the young up comming crop and the old guard.

Simply put, why hasn't he been captain earlier ?

Why was razia and Williams not considered ?
Willi was a successful u/19 skip.

There is no one besides Hami, Cremer and Williams who are definites in every format. Hami should get a run.

Hmm, interesting. Would be good to know what his opinion was about the earlier skippers who looked uninterested / aloof / lethargic / stupid on the field. A captain can't smile?

I can draw a lot of parallels to Hamilton's appointment with Kumble's appointment as the Indian test team skipper at the fag end of his career. He did a great job of transitioning it to the next generation. Same kind of characters, great respect from the cricketing fraternity, Kumble was even referred to as "the smiling assassin" by many. No need to worry, I'd say.
