ANDY FLOWER IS OVERRATED

Post by watermelon »

Watermelon here,

First time poster but a long time lurker.

Really sick of seeing 'Andy this, Andy that' as if he was some kind of batting supremo Like Ponting,Sharma, De villiers,Gayle etc.

He wasnt rubbish but he was a bit rubbish.
The reality is he was just your average county cricketer and when he was in domestic competitions around the world that is reflected.
He is only good by Zimbabwe standards.
You all only like him because he was white, if he was black he will only have the same reputation as Taibu, who is his equal, if not better.

From now on, I do not want to see any posts big noting Andy. The buck stops here and NOW.

Let me expand;

1- He made most of his high scores against Bangladesh and they were RUBBISH. I urinate on that team. If you take his Bangladesh scores, a different picture is painted.
2- The only players as bad as that Bangladesh scummy side was 80% of his own team mates. He had the luxury of doing whatever he wanted, and no pressure, because everyone is getting ducks around him so he knows if he got ducks no one would care. This is a big mental strain off his back. He also faced no pressure to score quickly for this reason, just hang around.
3- He couldnt even score properly, just reverse swept. anyone can do that. Try actually playing the spin on its merits. Modern day bowlers would counter this easily.
4- When he left Zimbabwe and rubbished the country, he went to Australian state cricket and did nothing. One big score in two seasons.
5- His keeping was useless and he dropped balls everywhere.
6- He only cared about Olonga and his brother and no one else. Attitude stunk.
7- How often did he step up against very good bowling? Rarely.

Please. no more Andy Flower talk.

I'll only say this once.

Complete and utter shite! Your article that is, not Andy Flower, who was phenomenal. Oh, and his highest score was 232 not out, in India.

Hi Watermelon,

Glad you have shifted from lurking to commenting.

Andy made many big scores against big teams. If he was black, I would love him more.

He actually had few tests against BD, who granted, were bad enough to let Wishart and Gripper get test centuries.

I can understand you becoming tired of Andy this, Andy that posts, but an average of 51 in tests is never easy to achieve. Even with today's bats and boundary ropes it is still a challenge. In Flower's era it was a proper achievement.

What are you basing this off? A quick search reveals only 1 of his highest 20 scores were against Bangladesh

Only 4 of his 112 Innings were against Bangladesh; even if you take them out his average drops by less than a run from 51.54 to 50.62 which is still amongst the best of the players you mentioned when you look at their stats without Bangladesh to pad their figures:

Player, Ave. not including BD (Ave. vs all teams)
Ponting 51.64 (51.85) 5 innings
Flower 50.62 (51.54) 4 innings
AB De Villiers 50.46 (51.31) 5 innings
Gayle 41.39 (42.18)
Sharma 34.23 (33.18) 1 innings

And when you take into account someone like Ponting never had to play Australia while Flower never got a chance to play Zimbabwe (against whom Ponting averages close to 100) it makes his stats even more impressive.
