So Brexit has just won, and England are no longer in the EU. Or shortly wont be.
Does this open the door for Taylor, the Currans, Jarvis and whoever else to play their trade for Zim and county?
Kolpak deals are an EU thing right?
Brexit, did this just save Zimbabwean cricket?

I have very limited insight into how this affects players, but if it allows players like Taylor jarvis and the currans to play county cricket and also play for their countries its a blessing to us.
Hopefully someone will give us a good explanation on its implications to players.

Exactly what I was thinking when I first heard about this yesterday.
England will leave, Scotland and Wales will likely secede from the UK and join the EU as wholly independent nations. However, it could take 2+ years according to CNN to sort out all the red tape.
Hopefully, Taylor/Jarvis/Currans/Welch/Byrom can all come back ASAP. This could be the best thing for ZIM cricket (and also cricket in general). Although out of all of those guys, Jarvis seems like he genuinely hates ZC to the point where he won't come back even for a million dollar salary.
Hoping for the best so I can stop rooting against ZIM and root for ZIM once more!

Kolpak is an EU thing...if England leaves, it isn't obligated to operate under it anymore one would think. The whole thing sounded stupid in relation to cricket anyways.zimlover wrote:I have very limited insight into how this affects players, but if it allows players like Taylor jarvis and the currans to play county cricket and also play for their countries its a blessing to us.

It definitely won't allow them to pay county cricket, and play for Zim. To do that they would have to be contracted as official overseas players. This is never going to happen, as counties are only allowed 1 of those, and these guys aren't good enough really.zimlover wrote:I have very limited insight into how this affects players, but if it allows players like Taylor jarvis and the currans to play county cricket and also play for their countries its a blessing to us.

However, if the Kolpak rule goes, then they wouldn't be allowed to play in the UK as non-overseas players. In short, they wouldn't be allowed to play county cricket at all.
But, it will take at the very least a couple of years for the UK to actually leave. The Currans, who have UK passports, would be completely unaffected anyway.
Re: Brexit, did this just save Zimbabwean cricket?
wow..hadn't even thought that far..this is actually some good news in a way. the first thing I think it will stop from our perspective is the probability of our best players still playing for us like Williams being given the opportunity to sign a Kolpak deal even if its going to take 2 years for the brexit to actually take place. as for Jarvis I think his current contract will ensure he would have worked in the UK for at least 5 years meaning that he might just be lucky and get permanent stay which might allow him to continue playing there. As for Taylor I would assume he probably won't be offered a new contract after his current one expires. I'm not a legal expert so this is just guess work but this can only be good news for me.

Yeah, I think it's too late for anyone already in England.TapsC wrote:wow..hadn't even thought that far..this is actually some good news in a way. the first thing I think it will stop from our perspective is the probability of our best players still playing for us like Williams being given the opportunity to sign a Kolpak deal even if its going to take 2 years for the brexit to actually take place. as for Jarvis I think his current contract will ensure he would have worked in the UK for at least 5 years meaning that he might just be lucky and get permanent stay which might allow him to continue playing there. What this might do, is make it harder for Zimbabweans to play county cricket in future, so may result in one or two players staying put, when they previously would not have done. Again though, anyone with access to a UK passport is unaffected.
Re: Brexit, did this just save Zimbabwean cricket?
I have to admit I did stay up all night to watch the results come in as I am a bit of a politics nerd...
My take is that any negotiation between the UK (not just England, and Wales definitely won't be leaving the UK any time soon!) and the EU is likely to take at least 2 years so nothing will change until then. Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty has to be invoked in order to start formal negotiations. However, outgoing PM David Cameron has said he won't start this process and will wait until his successor is installed in around October. Once Article 50 is brought into play the clock starts ticking on 2 years of negotiations but even this can be extended by mutual agreement.
Regarding some Zim players they will have UK passports so as stated will be completely unaffected whatever happens. I think Jarvis and Taylor are both Kolpak though and will be affected. The ECB may, of course, alter the rules or grant an amnesty to kolpak players currently under contract. There is also the issue of 7-year residency qualification to look out for. Younger players from Zim in future may, of course, be discouraged from leaving for a scholarship at a UK school in future if they know they may have to wait 7 years to play county cricket as a non-overseas player.
South Africa provides another dimension I think because a small number of their players qualify by having an Dutch/EU passport (van der Merwe at Somerset).
As we are all discovering today, there are so many unknowns to what is largely an unexpected result!

Britain can of course re-negotiate its relationship with the EU so that they are a bit like Norway which has freedom of movement and similar employment laws as EU members. Brexit doesn't have to mean isolation.
