Interesting to see that he was sent to Worcestershire on a Zimbabwe Cricket Union scholarship. I'd like to know the details of that and why they did that? I remember Ash being booed when he played for England at HSC.

I see Sam Curran got 96 today, now bats ahead of Tom. He's set for a stellar career.

sam curran is a huge loss to zim cricket a loss we can
never replace. had he been in zim he shouldve had
his test debut by now & on ballance he was selected
for zim cricket but refused as he knew he was going to
be selected for england due to his form. nick welch
and ed byrom are probably trying to go the same way
difference is ballance stayed here & played here until
england selected him. welch & byrom two talented
youngsters who had a strong reputation already should
be in zim A by now but they thought it was going to be easy
to break into england. Probably wont even come back
until they are 27+ years old or will never return at all
if not convinced by someone like andy flower ( if he
takes the head coach job ) a dream in itself which means
they wont come back imho

Not sure about Tom, but Sam Curran lived in Zim with his family until Kevin Curran died. He even went to school in Zim and played for junior teams. Kevin was well settled with his family in Zimbabwe, and was part of Mash Eagles. Had he not died so early we could have seen Sam in Zim colors.

There's absolutely no way he would have stayed here. His brother had already been approached by Surrey when he was at Hilton and KC's connections were massive in Englsnd. Plus of course Sam was born in the UK. my point is that I don't believe he was a loss to Zim cricket because he would never have stayed. He would have been just one more guy that they would have perceived to have taken advantage of the astonishing facilities and opportunities on offer here and then fled to whiter pastures. Obviously that decision was made for him by the tragic passing of his dad, but any cricketer worth his salt that has the opportunity to play county will do so. Nobody in their right mind would hang around Zim cricket hoping the admin would do right by them and that things would improve. In the highly unlikely event that we can flush out these people and get some people in that players trust you may find some decent cricketers will consider coming back here, but the fact is that they would have to fail there first. One doesn't necessarily fail because one lacks the ability, a lot of opportunities there are based on who can open a door for you in the first place and how long they can keep it wedged open whilst the cricketer tries to do something useful enough to get a contract. It's obvious that often there's small degrees between success and failure, and once exposed to a better level of cricket the good guys immediately go up a notch. I would be curious how long a schoolboy has to be away from Zimbabwe before he considers himself another nationality. When you get treated like a second class citizen in all aspects of society I would think it doesn't take very long.

My question/ponderance is;

How long would the culture and mindset of fleeing Zim still linger, even when there are improvements?

I feel its gotten to the stage where its now the 'done' thing to do.

I'm curious how a player like Craig Ervine feels in the system.

The top white guys seem to get treated as well as anyone else in the system. Cremer walked back into the team and the captaincy. Sean Williams is one of the highest paid, despite his inconsistent form and character, and Craig Ervine, PJ Moor, and Malcolm Waller are never far from selection. If Byrom and Welch wanted to play for Zimbabwe, I think they would join this top tier.
Neil Johnson, Alistair Campbell, Murray Goodwin, Andy Flower (w), Grant Flower, Dave Houghton, Guy Whittall, Heath Streak (c), Andy Blignaut, Ray Price, Eddo Brandes
