[Suggestions]: Zim head coach

Post by Detective RDS »

Who would you pick as Zim head coach ? Suggest your candidates both from the names doing rounds and also the names not doing rounds.

1. From the names doing rounds, Rahul Dravid can be the best choice. Batting expert. Mentored Rajasthan Royals and known for creating a brand of cricket. Works with young players. But don't think he will be interested to leave his BCCI and IPL job.

2. Andy Flower is an attractive choice as well. From Zimbabwe, best batsman produced by Zimbabwe. Coached England on becoming no 1 test side. But don't think he will be interested to leave his ECB job.

3. Heath Streak name comes next. He was critical in the rise of the pace bowling stocks of Ban. He can do the same with Zim pace bowling. Ex captain of Zim, experienced. He quit Ban bowling coach role to get Ind head coach role but eventually got IPL bowling coach job. It would have been nice if he was interested.

4. Gary Kirsten, the ex Indian coach who lead Ind to WC title can be valuable for technical aspects of batting. He coached Sou and tried to include young players but his process didn't work quite well there and after that experienced an unsuccessful stint as IPL coach. He will be able to work with the young players.

5. I believe it's not wise to go back to Stephen Mangongo or Douglas Hondo. Mangongo fared a lot of controversies and his coaching style has flaws at senior level. He should only identify and develop talents. Hondo is just not experienced enough to coach a national side. Ntini as head coach is way better than Mangongo or Hondo as head coach.

6. From the outside, Darren Berry from Australia is a name who could have been a decent fit for this job. Ex coach of South Australia redbacks and Adelaide Strikers. Experienced success with Redbacks in the shorter formats but not so much in longer format. Can work very well with young players and integrate them. Was on the running for becoming Victoria head coach but missed out, don't think he will be interested on Zim job.

Opinions and suggestions ?

It's the bitter truth. But batsmen like Craig Ervine accelerates the fans dream.

What is required is a long term planning as well as short term fixes of flaws, domestic infrastructure revamp with more games & teams (5 at least for the premium competition) and a clear road map. It's long overdue.

For the head coach job, for me Heath Streak is the best option in the context of Zimbabwe.

Really dreaming that somehow he is able to bring Brendan Taylor, Sean Ervine to play for Zimbabwe again.

Along with the aforementioned names, how about considering Robin Brown?

Shared a bottle of wine with him 2 summers ago, and he 100% should be the man to take the reigns. Cracking shout Eugene, forgot all about Robin.
Although in his book Butcher labelled Brown (along with Curran, James and Flower) as the 'Professors of negativity'. Odd, as Brown only ever spoke highly of Zimbabwean Cricket....not so much the administration side mind..

Butcher was pretty friendly with ZC management for much of his time I think. He did like Prosper afterall.

Robin Brown has the expirience but having a Rhodie as coach may upset the cart

Heath Streak for me. Knows Zimbabwe and Zimbabwe cricket, and all it's issues, so probably knows what he's getting himself in for. Seems to still have a genuine desire to see the team do well.
