UK 2017
Re: UK 2017
Does anyone know where Diplock is going next season? He had a cracking season in UK this past year.

Re: UK 2017
think he's agreed to return to edenfield. they stayed in their division. so he'd be playing in the 3rd tier of the greater manchester league. still a decent standard thoughFlakeman wrote:Does anyone know where Diplock is going next season? He had a cracking season in UK this past year.

I know my club has made him an offer
Re: UK 2017
Can someone please explain to me again why a third division Manchester team would want, or be able to pay other club cricketers?

It's the nature of the beast in uk cricket. Most leagues are classedoing as "open". This means in theory you could pay 11 players if you've got the finances. For some clubs it's all about winning and.if they are a financially green club or have a money man who backs them then the cheque book will be out to give them chance to win silverware.ZIMDOGGY wrote:Can someone please explain to me again why a third division Manchester team would want, or be able to pay other club cricketers?
My club is just about getting by financially. This year we struggled as the weather was.poor this summer so a lot of games were called.off so the bar profits were down etc. We get an overseas in who apart from being our best player and match winner helps run our junior coaching program and leads the senior training session too. As a lot of us have ever jobs that finish around 6pme mid week it's essential to have everything the overseas help with training as we wouldn't be able to set the training sessions ourselves as we wouldn't be down at the club in time!
My club only pays overseas players to play, but we get a great all.round deal in my eyes as the player who comes in takes on the coaching and playing role. We have a good group of amateurs to back up the overseas in that respect. The clubs who pay local players to play don't really always get help off that player at club functions / junior training etc the player just plays collects his money and gets off home without staying behind and having a drink.
My club is big on group socialising. During the season all 22 lads from the 1st and 2nd train, play, drink, eat, socialise together as we are a.small bunch compared to other clubs who have loads of players to choose from. Whoever we get in as overseas becomes part of the family, period.

A club after my own heart. We do the same at my club in Scotland. Hire a guy to play and coach, give something back whilst he is in the country, unlike other teams who pay half their team to win a league with no prize money!
I have a name I'd like people to comment on. My club has 2 overseas player per season, 1 pro and one "overseas amateur" (a player under the age of 23 who is on the borderline of pro cricket without actually playing first class, list a or t20 cricket). The name given to us to fill this role this year is Shane Chigumbura, Elton's brother. Has anyone seen him play?

Re: UK 2017
I havnt seen him play but he has not lit the scene rarely mentioned in my club circles. I think they are some real great kids though like Milton Shumba yooung Robinson would also be a great under 23 pic great attitude and big heart with fast developing skills.

Thanks LJRiley for the detailed response.
Things are certainly more formal in England than they are here. No way would we pay pepper to play in an amateur league. We actually demand fees.
My further question is,
Why the focus on Zimbabwean talent?
There's only 500 or so players In the country so the well runs dry fairly quickly.
Why don't English teams just pilfer Aussie, safer or kiwi talent? Well runs much deeper.
